Today, Samsung confirmed that they are launching Bixby, their personal voice-based assistant that will debut on their flagship Galaxy S8. Although the news was confirmed a few days ago, the official announcement came in today via their official blog post.
The company describes Bixby as a solution to the modern problem where devices are getting more complicated and difficult for users to use them. Bixby will not only be proficient in a number of different areas to help it assist whilst using the device but also be a new way of interacting with the smartphone.
According to Samsung, Bixby will do much more than just order an Uber or a pizza from the local place. The long-term vision is that Bixby will act as a kind of single interface for all of the Samsung products including TVs. wearables, washing machines, and even remote controls.
Bixby is designed with a specific goal in mind -- to be different than the already available from rival voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, Cortana etc. Where the rest of the assistants just help users with specific common tasks like setting up an alarm or a quick web search, Bixby aims to bring the voice assist in every single action in an app that the user would normally do by touch.
Just like the Google Assistant, Bixby will be context aware and help you take appropriate steps after interacting with it. It also going to leverage natural language recognition so that you won't be constrained by using particular terms to get the desired results.
CTO of Samsung Mobile, Dr. Injong Rhee, said that the voice assistant is nothing short of an "interface revolution" that'll free the users from hunting down hidden functionality within menus and hard-to-free screens and. He added,
Bixby is an intelligent user interface, emphasis... on 'interface. A lot of agents are looking at being knowledgeable, meaning that you can ask questions like, 'Who's president of the U.S.?' A lot of these are glorified extensions of search. What we are doing with Bixby, and what Bixby is capable of doing, is developing a new interface to our devices.
This thing overall is a great news, given the confirmation of the Galaxy S8, the new smart AI platform will span across the Samsung's upcoming tech devices. The company added, "Bixby is at the heart of our software and service evolution as a company." Get ready to hear more reports and news related to Bixby in the upcoming weeks and months.
