24 April 2018 3

Since the launch of the Huawei P20 Pro, we have reported about two different camera comparisons pitting the modern smartphone camera marvel against the vintage Nokia Lumia 1020. This time around, we are covering a similar comparison but with two extra players (one modern and one old) in the battle. These are the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and Nokia Lumia 950 which are also known for their impressive camera capabilities.

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ is a dual camera smartphone with a variable aperture which can be helpful in adjusting how much light passes through the sensor. Eventually, it can help users click better photos even in low-light situations. As for the Lumia 950 XL, it comes with a 20-megapixel shooter with Carl Zeiss optics and f/1.9 aperture accompanied with triple-LED flash.

Here is a quick overview of the camera specifications for each of the smartphones:

With all those technical details out of the way, let's just jump straight to the camera samples to see what each of these smartphones camera samples bring to the table.

The first shot here is of Bluebells flowers which have been captured in broad daylight. As you can see from the shots above, all of the smartphones have performed quite comparatively. The details look sharp and even though the Huawei P20 Pro is the sharpest, it can be noticed that there is software-based processing involved. As for whether it is a good or bad thing, it would completely depend on one's personal preference.

This second sample shot shares the similar story which we saw in the first case. The level of detail is quite similar for all four smartphones with the major difference being the dynamic range. Both Samsung and Huawei turned out to be washing out the sky as compared to the Lumia devices. It should be noted that this does not mean that both modern-age flagships have a bad dynamic range, it simply means that Lumia performed comparatively better.

This is a slightly complex subject as compared to the first two shots. Here, the statue has been captured in the daytime but under the shadow conditions. The shots were also captured with LED flash on to see what would be the effect on the end result. As it is noticeable in photos, the Lumia 1050's shot appearing to be brighter than other samples. It is because of the Xenon flash available with the phone which was one of the best selling points of the device. You can notice that LED flash of the device is far brighter than the competition.

This particular shot has been captured to taste the zoom capabilities of the four smartphones. The best among the lot is the Nokia Lumia 1050 because of its PureView technology. As for the main player of attraction P20 Pro, the zoom shot resulted in the loss of details which is something one would not expect from the smartphone.

The next shot here is also about zoom quality but the focus here is on the maximum zoom. This is the scenario where the P20 Pro is proved to be the best. Its algorithm-powered camera prowess proved to be useful in this situation where it even outsmarted the Lumia 1050 here.

This is another zoom shot for you to see and compare. We would like to know which one you liked better in this case.

Lastly, we have the night shot here to see which of the smartphones performs better under low-light situations. The Huawei P20 Pro ends up winning the test here without any issues or surprises. Same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S9+ which clicked better photo as well. As for the Lumias, their results are good considering that they are years-old devices but not good enough if you compare with the modern age.

Why I feel for Lumia 1020 is because it's being compared with the likes of Huawei P20 Pro and Galaxy S9+ just because it's a "camera phone". But the phone is 5 years old now.
