Apple has launched the updated MacBook Air with some notable improvements around the keyboard and performance as well at the starting price of $999. As speculated, the new MacBook Air has an improved scissor-switch keyboard that Apple likes to call the “Magic Keyboard,” something which recently also updated in the Pro model. The new mechanism promises to be comfortable, responsive and offers a stable key feel as Apple claims with the help of 1mm of key travel and inverted-T arrow keys as the 16-inch Pro.
The other big change is around the performance as Apple has employed 10th-gen Intel Ice Lake processors (Y-series) up to 1.2GHz quad-core Core i7. Apple touts the new MacBook Air 2020 delivers 80 percent improved graphics performance, thanks to the new Intel Iris Plus Graphics.
There is one more major enhancement and that is around the storage. Apple has increased the base storage to 256GB and the users can configure all the way up to 2TB. It also gets support for up to 6K external display, a first for MacBook Air.
In terms of design, nothing much has changed, the new MacBook Air 2020 bears the same aluminum design that debuted in 2018.
Like other MacBooks, the new MacBook Air also has Apple T2 Security chip, Apple’s own custom-designed second-generation silicon that offers data encryption for everything stored on the SSD. There is a built-in 49.9 watt-hour lithium-polymer battery that is touted to deliver up to 11 hours of wireless Web or up to 30 days of standby time on a single charge.
The 2020 MacBook Air includes a three-mic array for more clear voice capture, Thunderbolt 3 ports for data transfer, charging and video output in a single connector. The MacBook Air 2020 has a base price of $999 and $899 for education customers. The 2020 MacBook Air is available to order right away from apple.com and via the Apple Store app. It will also be available in stores starting next week. The new MacBook Air comes in Space Grey, Silver, and Gold color options.
