Samsung's under-display camera tech is here but will debut on laptop

14 January 2021 0

In the past few years, we have seen smartphone brands try every possible way to reduce phone bezels as much as possible. This is the reason phones have released with notches, punch-holes, and even pop-up selfie cameras. The next way around considered by a few brands is the under-display camera technology. Samsung is one of the brands working on the tech and is now seems to be ready to announce a product.

Samsung Display has shared a short teaser video on Weibo offering a look at the under-display camera tech. While the tech was expected to launch on a smartphone, it has decided to make its commercial debut on a laptop. The product is named Samsung Blade Bezel which is an apt name for a laptop with minimal bezels.

The team has made use of an OLED display panel to achieve the goal of integrating a camera within. It is claimed to deliver a screen-to-body ratio of 93% which would make the laptop look bezel-less. The good thing is that the display panel thickness is just 1mm and weighs just 130 grams. This makes it a lot lighter than traditional IPS panels which weigh around 170 grams.

Samsung is yet to make an official announcement about such a laptop. It means we do not have much to talk about the product but the video confirms that a Samsung phone with an in-display camera is not too far. It is expected to release Galaxy Z Fold 3 with the technology and even Google is said to be considering the tech for the next-gen Pixel. The ZTE Axon 20 5G is the only commercially available phone with an under-display camera for now.
