New MacBook Pros may push the adoption of mini-LED display tech in the industry

18 August 2021 0

In a new investor note, the very notable Ming-Chi Kuo has kept the adoption of mini-LEDs by Apple as the main subject. Kuo strongly believes the industry will be swayed by the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks that are expected to feature the mini-LEDs.

Kuo points out that MacBook shipments have not grown much in the past few years, but expect it to grow significantly by 20% YoY in 2021 and a year ahead, due to the adoption of mini-LED panels. Additionally, the report also mentions that other changes like Apple M1X SoC and design change will further play a major role in catalyzing the sale.

Kuo believes Apple’s heavy investment in the mini-LED display panels will play a major role in steering the industry towards investing more into such panels. As per a past report from DigiTimes, Apple has already managed to secure deals with mini-LED suppliers, a good sign that Apple is quite bullish about the adoption.

Other speculated features of the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models include M1X chip, MagSafe magnetic power cable, HDMI port, SD card slot.

Also, as per previous reports, Apple is also working on a thinner and lighter version of the MacBook Air. Rumors suggest this MacBook Air will feature a mini-LED display as well, a significant upgrade over the existing MacBook Air display.

Kuo further predicts that Apple will start shifting towards micro-LEDs in 2023.

Kuo in the investors’ note has reportedly mentioned –

We predict that the production cost of Micro LED will improve significantly starting in 2023–2024, so it will likely be a market focus from 2023 onwards. We believe Apple is developing Micro LED technology, but the production schedule is not yet confirmed.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to go on sale in November. Apple reportedly has multiple events to hold the remaining year.
