Google cancels Pixelbook 2023 and dissolves the Pixelbook team | Report

13 September 2022 2

Google has reportedly canceled the Pixelbook notebook which was expected to go official in 2023. It has further decided to dissolve the whole Pixelboom team as those employees have now been moved to different departments. The report is coming from The Verge citing an anonymous source familiar with the developments.

The decision has been taken as part of the company's cost-cutting measures. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has been quite vocal about consolidating investment overlaps and streamlining processes. He also talked about slowing down new recruitments and cutting down on projects to focus on high-priority things.

The first-ever Chrome OS notebook from Google was Chromebook Pixel which arrived in 2013. It was followed by the first Pixelbook release in 2017 which was a premium device with luxurious pricing. The next and last notebook release was in 2019 in the form of Pixelbook Go. It was an affordable alternative but when compared with the competition, it was still an expensive option.

Laura Breen, Communication Manager at Google told The Verge:

"Google doesn’t share future product plans or personnel information; however, we are committed to building and supporting a portfolio of Google products that are innovative and helpful for our users. In regards to our people, in times where we do shift priorities, we work to transition team members across devices and services."

Even though the report suggests there will not be a new Pixelbook in the foreseeable future, it does not mean there will not be a new one ever. We have seen Google cancel new products and launch a new one after a few years. The best example of this is the upcoming Pixel tablet which will be its first since the release of the last one in 2018.
