Samsung is the market leader in the foldable smartphones market. Its latest Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are already widely popular among foldable fans. The company is now reported to be eying a new segment i.e. foldable laptops. As per The Elec, Samsung is working on a foldable OLED display laptop for launch in 2023.
The report claims Samsung Display is developing a 17.3-inch foldable OLED display panel for Samsung Electronics. The device will have a 13.3-inch panel when used in the folded state. It will be a device with the largest foldable display panel and even beating the Asus ZenBook 17 Fold OLED that launched earlier this year.
It is said to have set a target of shipping 8.5 million OLED notebook displays next year. A significant portion of the lot will be supplied to Asus, Samsung Display's largest customer of foldable panels. This is an impressive 43% growth in comparison to the 5.94 million shipment goal for this year.
The report adds Samsung originally wanted to release the foldable OLED notebook this year but had to delay the launch due to unknown reasons. It would have competed with Asus' foldable laptop if everything had gone as per the plan. One advantage to Samsung is that it can price its own foldable laptop a lot cheaper than Asus. This is because it does not have to rely on another supplier to procure foldable display panels.
