Xiaomi Play launch reportedly set for December 24 | UPD: new teaser

18 December 2018 2

UPDATE (December 18th, 2018):

It seems like Xiaomi is indeed set to announce the Xiaomi Play smartphone on December 24th. A new teaser regarding the launch date has emerged showing the same name and launch event date. Unfortunately, the teaser does not add anything new or substantial to what we have heard already.

Original (December 12th, 2018)

Xiaomi is reportedly working on a new smartphone said to be called Xiaomi Play. The report is based on a leak coming from the Chinese social network Weibo which further claims that it is likely to be made official within the next couple of weeks. To be specific, the event is expected to happen between December 17th and December 26th but December 24th is speculated to be the most likely date.

The exact details regarding the Xiaomi Play smartphone are unknown at the moment and it is the first time we are hearing about it. There is a good chance that it might just be a fake leak but if it turns out to be true, the name suggests it could be a gaming smartphone. In such a case, it can be expected to come with the latest flagship processor, bigger display, and a huge battery.

It is worth noting that Xiaomi already as a gaming smartphone lineup called Black Shark. This is another reason to be skeptical about this alleged leak of a new gaming smartphone as it does not make sense to have two different phones serving the same purpose.

But there is another speculation is that the Xiaomi Play is simply a rebranded version of the Poco F1 for the Chinese market. The Poco F1 launched about four months ago in select markets including India. It is currently the most affordable smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. This seems to be the most plausible speculation so far but we will have to wait until December 24th to find the truth.
