Amazon is reportedly working on its own gaming streaming service. This report is coming from The Independent citing sources briefed with the company's plans. It is speculated that the eCommerce giant is all set to take on the likes of Google, Microsoft, Sony, and NVIDIA in the gaming sector.
The report mentions that Amazon has started working on the service with an expected public release sometime next year. As the name suggests, the service will allow users to stream games from the cloud like we stream movies, TV shows, music, and other videos. It will eliminate the need for spending money on getting a gaming console as well as to buy and download new games. All the games will be installed on a remote server which will also handle all the processing. A user will simply need to get the service subscription, choose the game, and start streaming.
This is not the first time we are hearing about such a service. There have been many attempts in the past but none of them turned out to be a success. But this time around, the heavyweights of the technology world have started to explore the category. Sony already has a service called PlayStation Now, Google is currently beta testing Project Stream, and Microsoft is working on Project xCloud. Other interested players in the field include EA Sports and NVIDIA.
Amazon's foray into the gaming streaming service has the potential to change everything. It is the market leader when it comes to cloud-based services as its Amazon Web Services is used a number of big businesses. It has all the resources, financial backing, and a lot of industry experience to deliver a smooth cloud-based streaming experience. Additionally, it already has its Prime subscription service which offers a wide range of benefits to users in exchange for a nominal monthly/annual fee. It means Amazon's game streaming service can be bundled with Prime which will be a huge advantage for the company. Moreover, it can attract gamers to Prime who have not subscribed yet.
As we said that it is true that none of the similar services worked before, things are definitely different now. The number of users with a fast and reliable internet connection has increased many folds and it is expected to go only upwards from here. All in all, the battle for the ultimate game streaming service has already started to heat up and we should be in for a treat for sure.
