Samsung introduces world’s first UFS 256GB memory card

07 July 2016 0

Today,Samsung has announced the world’s first UFS (Universal Flash Storage) memory removable data storage card that could one day replace the slower micro-SD cards in devices.

The UFS card, based on the Universal Flash Storage 1.0 Card Extension standard, will come in different storage capacity of 32, 64, 128, or 256 gigabytes. The storage media could be used in cameras, drones, robots, virtual reality headsets and ultimately, even mobile devices.

The UFS cards have sequential read speeds of up to 530 megabytes per second which is five times faster than the best microSD cards in the market. That means it will take roughly 10 seconds to to read a 5 gigabyte, full HD movie where UHS-1 microSD card manages the same feat in around 50 seconds.

The Writing speed will also significantly improved at the rate of up to 170 MB/s which is nearly double the performance of the very fastest microSDs, but seven or eight times faster than the cards recommended to non-professionals. With these substantial performance improvements, the new 256GB UFS card significantly reduces multimedia data downloading time, photo thumbnail loading time and buffer clearing time in burst shooting mode, which, collectively, can be particularly beneficial to DSLR camera users.

while the new UFS standard has appeared as embedded memory in a few devices (notably Samsung's own Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge), there are no products that yet support the cards as removable storage. It's also worth noting that even though UFS cards closely resemble their microSD counterpart but the new pin layouts of the two are not compatible.

The pricing and availability details have not yet to be announced for the range, so while UFS might be the next technological successor to formats used in microSD cards, the road map for how it actually gets into consumers' hands is less clear.

All we can say that if any tech company is going to be first to support removable UFS cards, it's more likely to be Samsung. Lets wait and watch who is going make the UFS Compatible devices.
