WhatsApp dark mode comes to beta users | UPD: Available to everyone

Update: March 4, 2020

WhatsApp from Facebook for Android and iOS has finally received the dark mode for everyone. The feature was under months of beta testing and is now only rolling out to everyone. Android 9 users and iPhone users on iOS 13 can simply enable the new Dark Theme in the WhatsApp settings menu.

WhatsApp dark mode or Dark Theme doesn’t use a completely black background and white font color as this may not turn out to be a good experience for eyes.

A WhatsApp spokesperson has reportedly said,

“During testing we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue. So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare, and improves contrast and readability.

WhatsApp is finally rolling out the dark mode to the users in the beta channel after much of its internal testing. WhatsApp is quite late in pushing out this most-wanted feature but it started working on the same last year, however, it took almost a year for the company to notice things internally.

Now, the dark mode is available for the users participating in WhatsApp Beta on the latest version (v2.20.13) of the app. Those who are already on the Beta channel can update the version and those who want to try the new feature, need to get registered first in the Beta channel. Enrolling to beta channel is not difficult, you just have to go to the WhatsApp Messenger Beta app on the Play Store and get yourself enrolled.

It remains unclear when the feature will be rolled out to the regular users but expect it to hit pretty soon. The feature meanwhile is under testing by the beta testers and they will give feedback to the creators on concerns like, if the feature needs any improvement or if there’s any bug that hinders it from working.

To get started

  1. Open the beta app and tap on the three-dot menu icon at the top right corner of the screen and select Settings from the menu.
  2. On the Settings page, tap on Chats, and then tap on Theme.
  3. Then choose Dark and it will enable the dark mode interface across the app.

There is also a System default option, selecting which will automatically switch between dark and light mode based on the system settings.

So, sign up now for the WhatsApp Beta if you are not enrolled yet and try out the new Dark Mode.
