Disney+ India launch through Hotstar set for March 29

05 February 2020 0

It is official. Disney+ streaming service will arrive in India on March 29th i.e. in two months from today. It will be released through Hotstar, an India-based streaming service owned by Disney after it acquired Fox, as mentioned in a report from last year. The only difference is that it is now releasing way earlier than the previously reported timeline of the second half of 2020. The announcement regarding the release was made by Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, during the quarterly earnings call.

Disney+ will kick-off in India on the same day Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 begins. The latter is the biggest sporting event streamed by Hotstar during which it attracts millions of users. The annual cricket event is so much popular that it helps Hotstar set new streaming records.

Hotstar currently offers two membership plans: Hotstar VIP and Hotstar Premium. Disney+ will be released with a new name Disney+ Hotstar and will have no effect on these two memberships. It is said that the Premium plan will include all of Disney+ offerings including original programs.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney said,

“We're not giving specifics about price at this point but expect that there'll be two primary products brought into India. One will be more premium in nature that will include the entire library, so with the original programming and the other one will be more basic that will have the library and not the original programming."

There are currently on words whether there will be any changes to the pricing structure. It is widely speculated that Hostar will increase prices but we will suggest you wait until an official announcement.
