It is finally official. Samsung's second foldable smartphone is here and it is named Galaxy Z Flip to mark the design change as compared to the Galaxy Fold. The newly announced phone has a 'clamshell flip' foldable mechanism that is similar to what Motorola has done with the Moto RAZR (2019).

The all-new Galaxy Z Flip makes use of an ultra thin glass that Samsung is referring to as "first-of-its-kind" foldable glass. It has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display as the main display. It offers 2636 x 1080 pixels display resolution and a 21.9:9 aspect ratio. It also has a 1.1-inch 300 x 112 pixels Super AMOLED display on the outside that is officially called "Cover Display".

The new foldable design makes it easier to carry Galaxy Z Flip around. When folded, it turns into a square-shaped phone that is so compact that it fits even in your palm. The secondary "Cover Display" is always there to help you check relevant information quickly without having to unfold the device. It can even be used for performing certain actions like responding to incoming calls and capturing selfies.

One of the unique things about the Galaxy Z Flip is its new hinge mechanism that Samsung is calling Hideaway Hinge. It is explained as the "work of engineering art. It’s backed by a dual CAM mechanism – small but sophisticatedly designed to ensure every flip and fold is smooth and stable. The Hideaway Hinge system also integrates Samsung’s new sweeper technology, which uses nylon fibers crafted by micro-height-cutting technology to repel dirt and dust."

The new hinge will allow users to keep the phone open at a right angle as well at a slightly higher angle similar to how people use laptops. This new mode is called Flex Mode and it can be used for a wide range of tasks where one half of the display becomes a preview pane and the other half offers all the options and menus that you need. It should be noted that this mode will work only with compatible apps like YouTube and phone's gallery app.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip features an unnamed 7nm octa-core processor clocked at 2.95GHz. It has been announced in the sole configuration variant of 8GB of RAM and 256GB onboard storage. There is a dual rear camera setup featuring a 12-megapixel 123-degree Ultra Wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 12-megapixel 78-degree wide-angle sensor with f/1.8 aperture. There is a 10-megapixel front camera with a f/2.4 aperture and an 80-degree field of view.

The whole package is powered by a 3,300mAh battery with fast charging support. It will run One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 out of the box. Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.0, and USB Type-C port. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack but Samsung is bundling the phone with a pair of USB Type-C earphones tuned by AKG.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has been priced at $1,380 with sales starting February 14th in the United States and South Korea. It has been released in Mirror Purple and Mirror Black color variants. Some select markets will also get an extra Mirror Gold color option.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition

Samsung has also announced a limited edition Galaxy Z Flip in collaboration with renowned American fashion designer Thom Browne. As you would expect, this limited edition phone is called Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition. It features a unique color scheme described as "distinctive Thom Browne signature brand colors on a pebble grey exterior, pulled right from the runway". The interesting thing is that every buyer will also get a limited edition Galaxy Buds+ truly wireless earphones and Galaxy Watch Active2 smartwatch to complete the look.

The smartphone features a special theme including app icons and text style. It has a keyboard tone of a typewriter and an analog ringtone of shoe taps on a marble floor to complete the unique vibe. Samsung has not revealed the pricing for this special edition but has made it clear that only limited quantities will be made available for purchase. It will go on preorders starting February 14th via Samsung's online store, Thomebrowne.com, NET-A-PORTER, and MR PORTER.
