Samsung has already started diversifying the foldable smartphones segment and the very recent Galaxy Z Flip is an example of it. Samsung could have just brought the successor to the Galaxy Fold but it rather chose to offer a different form factor in the foldable segment. In fact, the clamshell-shaped Galaxy Z Flip with a foldable “glass” differs in many ways. It has an Ultra-Thin Glass rather than the polyimide material which was used in the first-generation Galaxy Fold. This makes the Galaxy Z Flip the world’s first device to feature the foldable glass.
But, that’s not the only change the Galaxy Z Flip has arrived with. According to SamMobile which managed to take a dip into the internal documents, the Galaxy Z Flip has a shock absorption layer as well that further enhances the display’s durability. As the name implies, this layer would protect the device from accidental drops.
The absorption layer provides impact resistance and it can suppress defects such as cracks and bubbles that may occur during any accidental drops.
But, in the durability test of the Galaxy Z Flip we saw that the device started showing the scratches earlier than existing phones. In fact, the scratches started appearing at a level 2 on the Mohs scale of hardness, suggesting that the foldable phone might just be using the plastic display as opposed to what is claimed by Samsung. Clearly, we can’t expect Gorilla Glass 6 level of durability from it and we hope the tech would take its leap to offer better and durable options.
Later in a statement to The Verge, Samsung did say that the UTG is first-of-its-kind technology and is different from other Galaxy flagship devices. The display can indeed bend but it should still be handled with care. Well, this official statement clarifies the air to some extent. And the UTG appears to be no more than a marketing gimmick which is being used to attract some eyeballs over the Galaxy Z Flip for its foldable glass.
Unlike others like Moto Razr 2019, the Galaxy Z Flip holds flagship specifications and has a better hinge as well. But these upgrades are still not enough when it comes to durability.
