HTC's presence in the mobile market segment has shrunk to almost negligible in the past couple of years. It has led to speculations that HTC mobile business is on the verge of shut down but every time, it makes an announcement about its commitment. It has done the same thing again as HTC has now revealed its plans to release a 5G smartphone in 2020.
Yves Maitre, CEO of HTC, shared plans about releasing HTC's first 5G smartphone during an interview. He did not offer any technical specifications or other details of the phone. It means the said phone could either be a true flagship or an upper mid-range smartphone. Both Qualcomm and MediaTek have 5G processors for both price categories which means HTC can opt any of them.
5G will undoubtedly be one of the main focus points for tech companies, especially the ones that deal with hardware products. We have already seen a number of smartphone makers launch their respective 5G smartphones. Many of them also have 5G smartphones lined up for the 2020 launch.
In other words, HTC will have a tough competition to beat as and when its own 5G offering will become official. If we go by the company's track record in the past few months, the future seems bleak. Nevertheless, we would be waiting for the official announcement to see if HTC manages to pull a rabbit out of a hat.
