Huawei Mate Xs with improved hinge and Kirin 990 SoC launched

24 February 2020 0

Huawei has announced the Mate Xs, yet another foldable smartphone at a live-streamed event today that was supposed to take place at MWC. Like its predecessor Mate X, the all-new Mate Xs also folds outside and looks entirely the same in terms of cosmetics, but there are a few improvements as well.

Huawei says its new Mate Xs has a more durable display. It comes with a quad-layer structure for added robustness. The top two layers of polyamide film are stuck together using a clear adhesive and below is the flexible OLED display. Then there’s a softer polymer layer that acts as a cushion and a final layer to connect it to the main body of the device. This makes an all-plastic construction with no glass whatsoever.

One of the major improvements in the Mate Xs is the Kirin 990 5G chipset which brings a performance boost. Another change is reflected on the hinge structure which according to Huawei makes the device more durable. There is now also an improved cooling system to provide better support in case of any extreme performance tasks.

Apart from these notable improvements, the Mate Xs has the same screen and even cameras as well. It has the same 6.6-inch OLED screen on the front and a 6.38-inch screen on the back that expands to an 8-inch FullView display when unfolded. There are quad-rear Leica-powered cameras, where 40MP is the main camera, a 16MP ultra wide-angle camera, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a TF sensor.

On the software side, Huawei says the Mate Xs can show up to three apps simultaneously with one on the left side of the display, one on the right, and a third in a floating window. Huawei also confirmed that the device is running on the latest version of the open-source version of Android, with Huawei Mobile Services instead of Google’s services.

Just like the display and camera, the battery capacity is also the same which is 4,500mAH. Unlike the original Mate X, which only released in China, the Mate Xs will be releasing in “global markets” as well. The price of the Mate Xs with 8GB ram and 512GB storage is €2,499.
