Xiaomi has become the first tech brand to cancel on-ground launch events in India due to Coronavirus concerns. The decision was taken after certain reports surfaced about Coronavirus victims being found in certain parts of the country. It is the reason that as part of precautionary measures, Xiaomi has decided to refrain from holding any launch events in the month of March.
The announcement was made by Manu Kumar Jain, Managing Director of Xiaomi India, who tweeted a note as the update. The next big launch event scheduled this month is for the Redmi Note 9 series. It was expected to happen on March 12th but as per the updated information, it will not happen now. Since the launch date remains unchanged, it seems like there will only be live streaming of the event but we will keep you posted on the developments.
Here is what the note from Manu Kumar Jain says,
"There is a global outbreak of Coronavirus COVID-19 that has affected people severely. Given this unprecedented situation, we have an important update for you. We won't be holding any launch events on-ground throughout March in India. While we've been planning this launch for months, we believe this step is crucial. We are taking this decision with the objective of reducing exposure risk to Coronavirus COVID-19 for our Mi fans, media friends, partners, and Xiaomi employees."
📢#Note the update: Due to recent reports of COVID-19 #CoronaOutbreak in certain parts of the country, we've decided to not host product launch events on-ground in March.— Manu Kumar Jain (@manukumarjain) March 3, 2020
This is keeping in mind safety of fans, media friends, employees & partners. I urge you all to stay safe. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/SOdDZtSkmo
Since the note specifically mentions March, it seems like a temporary decision but if the situation does not seem to improve, there is a good chance that it could be extended. If we talk about events around the globe, many other major tech brands have taken similar decisions in recent weeks.
The annual Game Developer Conference (GDC) and Google for Games Developer Summit have been postponed for the time being. Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, and Adobe are other major players to have opted for online-only events because of Coronavirus. The biggest consumer electronics and tech event Mobile World Congress (MWC) has been canceled completely altogether and even many other individual launch events have been shifted.
