As the COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to stay at home, many of them have become dependent on hotels and restaurants with food delivery options for their daily meals. This is the reason Google Maps application has been updated to highlight restaurants with food delivery and takeout facilities.
The updated Google Maps app now shows "Delivery" and "Takeout" shortcuts at the top of the home interface. These shortcuts are available next to the existing ones like Gas, Groceries, Chemists, Coffee, and Hotels. Tapping on any of these two new options will bring a list of relevant restaurants near your current location.
Google does not seem to have partnered with any third-party service for offering search results. It means whatever restaurants that will be shown will be based on the data Google already has. The newly added functionality is available with both Android and iOS apps. The exact region availability is unknown but it is expected to be a global rollout.
This is Google's latest initiative to help people during the global pandemic. It previously started a COVID-19 website and a Google Assistant shortcut for users to stay updated about the situation. It further updated the travel search to show updated COVID-19 travel advisories for different countries to help users plan their travel accordingly.
