OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro with Snapdragon 865 SoC, Wi-Fi 6 and 5G support launched

OnePlus 8 series has finally gone official after months of speculations. As expected, there are two phones in the series - OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro.

For the first time, OnePlus has opted for the punch-hole design in order to bring the full-screen experience. Both the phones run OxygenOS based on Android 10 and pack 8GB/12GB RAM with 128GB/256GB storage options. They both have Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G processor which means they are powerful for handling AI, image processing, gaming. Snapdragon 865 5G is energy efficient and offers performance better than its predecessor. There is also a 25% performance gain in graphics rendering, with energy efficiency improved by 35%.

Both, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro have curved glass on the back. They both feature punch-hole on the top right corner of the display. According to OnePlus, the punch-hole is just 3.8mm in size which is not too significant. Both the phones support Warp Charge 30T that can charge phones to 60% in just 30 minutes.

OnePlus also announced that both the phones support 5G and are available with Verizon as well. Both the phones have similar specifications to offer, though there are a few key differentiators. The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a bigger display, bigger battery with wireless charging support, 120Hz refresh rate, and quad rear cameras.

OnePlus 8

OnePlus calls OnePlus 8 has a burdenless design as it is a compact phone with lightweight, yet offering a full-screen display. It comes with a 6.55-inch AMOLED display and it is 5mm narrower and 42gms lighter than the iPhone 11 Pro Max that comes with a 6.5-inch display. The OnePlus 8 comes with an HDR10/HDR10 Plus that does advanced image processing to offer better color accuracy and 90Hz refresh Fluid Display.

The OnePlus 8 packs triple rear cameras, a 48MP primary sensor with an f/1.75 aperture, followed by a 16MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a third 2MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture. It sports 16MP camera on the front with f/2.45 aperture.

OnePlus 8 Pro

OnePlus recalls that the OnePlus 8 Pro has the best display, according to DisplayMate. The OnePlus 8 Pro features 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED display with QHD+ (3168 x 1440 pixels) resolution and a 19.8:9 aspect ratio and 120HZ refresh rate support for an even smoother performance.

As suspected, the device supports the MEMC chip that just enhances the overall experience with a faster response rate. MEMC comes as a setting that can be turned ON and OFF.

The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a quad rear camera where the primary sensor is 48MP main camera with Sony IMX586 sensor and f/2.2 aperture. The secondary camera is also a 48MP ultra-wide camera with a Sony IMX689 sensor. The other two include a 3x telephoto camera with 30X digital zoom and a color filter camera.

It must be mentioned that the OnePlus 8 Pro is the company's first smartphone to offer IP68 water-resistant feature. This means it can withstand immersion under 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.

OnePlus 8 Pro is launched in three color options - Onyx Black, Ultramarine Blue, and Glacial Green.

Pricing and availability

OnePlus 8 with 8GB/128GB storage in Glacial Green is priced at $699; OnePlus 8 with 12GB/256GB storage costs $799 in Interstellar Glow.

OnePlus 8 Pro base model (8GB/128GB) in Glacial Green is $899 and the higher-specced OnePlus 8 Pro (12GB/256GB) in Ultramarine Blue and Onyx Black costs $999, just what OnePlus promised that all phones are priced below $1000. So, the Glacial Green color is not available with the highest model.

Both the phones will be available on T-Mobile and Verizon via OnePlus.com and Amazon.com in the US and Canada. Also, the open sales on the official website will start in these two regions on April 29th. Pre-orders in Europe start from today and will be available in open sales from April 21st. For your information, OnePlus didn’t launch the rumored OnePlus 8 Lite or the OnePlus Z phone.
