Xiaomi unveils MIUI 12 key features and list of eligible devices

27 April 2020 0

Xiaomi has announced MIUI 12, the latest iteration of its custom Android skin that will become available for select existing and all future devices. It was unveiled at the same event where it took wraps off the Mi 10 Youth Edition but for some reason, the new phone will arrive with MIUI 11. It seems like the new skin is still in the early development phase and is not ready for prime time.

As one would expect, MIUI 12 is packed with changes related to performance as well as the aesthetic aspect. Animations have been one of the key highlights of MIUI and with the new version, Xiaomi is touting new MIUI 12 animations to be as good as the ones on Apple's iOS. The team has revamped all of the system animations right from launching/exiting apps to locking/unlocking the phone and even accessing the recent apps interface. Similarly, Live wallpapers have been tweaked to offer a more immersive experience when a user interacts with them.

The user interface itself has been revamped to give it a flat look. It has also been made a lot cleaner so that users can focus on what's important instead of getting overwhelmed by the clutter. The focus is also on privacy as there are a few new features aimed at ensuring data privacy and safety of users. One such feature is Flare that will keep a log of all the sensitive app permissions and information accessed by apps on the device. It will even show alerts whenever an app would be using a camera, microphone, or GPS on your device.

The next feature is Barbed Wire where a user gets the freedom to choose whether to provide access to location, camera or microphone only once, all the time or only while using the app. The third and last major feature is called Mask System that masks all sensitive information like calendar, call logs, IMEI number, and contacts. One can even create a fake identity to share with apps they would not trust with their genuine information. Other noteworthy features include Multi-window support, Picture-in-Picture mode, AI calling, native sleep tracker, and exercise monitoring.
