Telegram reaches 400M monthly users; Promises to bring video calling feature soon

Telegram, a cloud-based instant messaging app offers so many features that you may not find in the widely used WhatsApp. But it still lacks a video calling feature which has now become a staple in 2020. Now, while announcing new features of Telegram, the company also revealed that it will soon bring the video calling feature.

First, the blog post reveals that Telegram now has over 400M monthly users, up from 300M a year ago. The company addresses that the app is “ideal for remote work and study during this quarantine” period. The company, however, didn't reveal the actual numbers, its ap is making on Android and iOS and how many desktop installs are involved.

Pavel Durov, Telegram founder addresses that video communication tool is in high demand these days and “video calls in 2020 are much like messaging in 2013.” So, the company does understand the importance and looking forward to launching it soon. While the company may be a little behind from launching a video communication tool, it is, at least, launching some other features that can prove to be valuable during this situation made by COVID-19.

Apart from the video calling facility on the app, the world is in dire need of many other things as well. Telegram is concerned that around 2billion students currently away from school, so the world is in the need of some educational tools. So, Telegram plans to crowd-source EUR 400,000 and distribute among creators and educations tests so to create a database of educational tests for all subjects and levels. In the light of this new initiative, the @QuizBot is receiving a new update as well which adds more features around education.

Telegram now allows us to create and publish an original educational test on any subject at any difficulty level, given that all intellectual property rights are respected. Telegram will then publish those quizzes in a searchable directory. Based on the quality and popularity, it will then announce the winners.

Telegram has also launched a sticker directory to easily find the best stickers all at once. Telegram says the app has over 20,000 high-quality free stickers created in the last 5 years.


Also, the Telegram app on Android gets a new attachment menu that has expanded layers, making the menu easy to access. One more cute little addition is animated darts which you can play with your contacts. Just look for darts in the emoji or try searching with ":darts" and send it to chats and see who hits the bullseye first.

There are a couple of improvements around macOS as well.
