Update: May 28, 2020

As promised the new Flyme 8.1 stable update is now rolling out to all the eligible phones. Note that the rollout has begun in China first and Meizu is yet to announce if the update will be rolled out globally as well.

Original Post (May 8, 2020)

Meizu unveiled Flyme 8.1 based on Android 10 at the same event where it introduced its new Meizu 17 series. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer also announced the names of the devices that will receive the newest OS upgrade.

The new Flyme 8.1 comes as an incremental update to Flyme 8 and it integrates customization improvements and optimizations, according to the company. The new update also brings enhanced Aicy assistant as well as better AI and gaming performance. It brings a new AI Engine which is said to be 30% better than its predecessor.

As the Flyme 8.1 is based on Android 10, it brings features from the latest Google’s Operating System as well as some customizations. It brings system-wide Android 10 Dark Mode and more major features.

The Meizu Flyme 8.1 is coming to 10 older devices of Meizu. These are 16T, 16s, 16s Pro, 16, 16 Plus, 16Xs, Note 9, X8, Note 8, and 16X. Meizu has not announced when the new Flyme 8.1 OS upgrade will reach these aforementioned phones but interested users in China can register for the initial release starting today till May 15.

It should be noted that not all the listed phones above from Meizu will receive the newest update in one go. It is presumably going to be a phased rollout where some users of all these devices will receive the update first followed by others. This helps in spotting the undiscovered bugs and performance issues and removing them before a wide rollout.

Needless to say, the new Meizu 17 and the Meizu 17 Pro will ship with Flyme 8.1 out-of-the-box.
