Google's Pixel team has reportedly two of its top executives Marc Levoy and Mario Queiroz due to the disappointing Pixel 4 performance. The report is coming from The Information which further mentions that Rick Osterloh, Head of Hardware division, internally criticized certain aspects of Pixel 4 performance ahead of its launch.
Starting with Levoy, you might remember him as the guy who demoed and talked about Pixel 4 camera performance at length during the launch event. He is said to be the main brain behind such an astonishing camera quality of Pixel smartphones. Since Pixel phones are widely known for their unmatched camera performance, his departure in March 2020 will undoubtedly be a big blow to Google.
Queiroz, on another hand, is said to have been involved in Google's hardware plans since the days of the T-Mobile G1 smartphone. He was basically an integral part of the evolution that saw the birth of the Nexus lineup and its demise followed by the arrival of the Pixel series. He spent over a decade at Google and while his departure might just be the natural path of looking for a new challenge, the timing of the move is expected to hurt the big G.
The report's most interesting bit is undoubtedly about Osterloh who is said to have expressed disappointment with Pixel 4, especially the poor battery performance. He is also reported to have shown disagreement with certain decisions taken in relation to the flagship.
It is mentioned,
"At a hardware team all-hands meeting in the fall, ahead of the October launch in New York, Osterloh informed staff about his own misgivings. He told them he did not agree with some of the decisions made about the phone, according to two people who were present at the meeting. In particular, he was disappointed in its battery power. "
There is no doubt that Pixel 4 has failed to live up to the expectations and has not managed to attract buyers in big numbers. Its disappointing battery life has been one of the reasons for the dull response. It is worth noting that the flagship comes with a Soli chip that already prevented Google from launching and selling the device in certain markets including India. At the moment, it is focusing on the launch of the mid-range Pixel 4a series which will be a lot cheaper and should get the attention of more buyers.
