It is a common sight for streaming service providers to have paid accounts that have not been used for a long time. This is applicable for Netflix as well but it has decided to do something about that. As per the official announcement, Netflix will cancel accounts that have been inactive for years.
Netflix will start with accounts that were created in the last year but have not been used since then. It will also do the same for accounts that have been inactive for at least two years. It will alert all these users through email and in-app notification asking whether they would like to continue with the subscription. Unless a user specifically chooses to continue, it will simply cancel the account to help them save money.
The announcement further mentions that all the accounts that will get canceled during this drill will always have the option to restart their membership. It will also keep all the details like favorites, user profiles, and viewing preferences saved for a period of 10 months so they if someone decides to re-join within the stipulated time, they can resume from the point where they left.
Eddy Wu, Product Innovation at Netflix, said that the decision has been taken as they do not want users to pay for something they are not using. Even though the count of such accounts is said to be only 0.5% of all accounts, it is still a good move from the company considering it could have decided to keep earning revenue as many other companies do.
