This beautiful wallpaper can brick your Android smartphone

01 June 2020 0

If you are an Android user, there is a good chance that you love personalizing your smartphone with new wallpapers, themes, and fonts among other things. This is the reason you should stay away from the wallpaper shown in this story as it is reported to have soft brick various Android smartphones.

The incident was first tweeted by Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), a well-known tipster on Samsung matters, who posted the wallpaper with a warning. His tweet reads, "Never set this picture as wallpaper, especially for Samsung mobile phone users! It will cause your phone to crash! Don't try it! If someone sends you this picture, please ignore it."

The same occurrence was later confirmed by a number of users. It is reported that simply setting the image as the phone's wallpaper makes it crash and unable to boot up. While it is said to be mostly affecting Samsung Galaxy smartphones, there have been reports of phones from other OEMs becoming the victim as well.

As per the investigation so far, it is the color profile of the image that is causing the issue. Android OS prefers sRGB color space for displaying images but this particular wallpaper has RGB color space. Since the latter is beyond what Android can control, it is ending up getting crashed. Android 11 is known to convert unsupported color spaces but with Android 10, it is not possible.

Even though not all the devices are affected by the image, we would suggest to our readers that they do not try it out even for fun purposes. If you have a spare device that you can afford to be soft bricked, then it is a different story but just do not do it on your daily driver.
