ByteDance is all set to shut down Vigo and Vigo Lite apps in India. Both of these are short video creation platforms similar to the global phenomenon TikTok, another app owned by ByteDance. It has already started sending in-app notifications to all the users which were first spotted by an online application Entrackr.
The alert message starts by thanking users for being a part of the platform. It goes on to reveal that Vigo apps will stop working after October 31st, 2020. It means there are still four months for users to keep sharing their content. ByteDance has further advised users to transfer their content and remaining diamonds to TikTok.
TikTok is undoubtedly the biggest short video creation platform in India. It boasts over 600 million downloads and 200 million active users from India alone. In comparison, Vigo and Vigo Lite have only 4 million and 1.5 million daily active users respectively. The difference gap between the two platforms is a very significant one.
Interestingly, Vigo apps have already been discontinued in the Middle East and Brazil. The team is working on removing the apps from other markets as well. It seems like ByteDance wants to reduce its expenses and consolidate its efforts and manpower on a single app i.e. TikTok.
