Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 690 processor to bring 5G to affordable smartphones. The semi-conductor company did not share any name of the OEMs which will employ the new chip into their phones. But, Juho Sarvikas, CPO at HMD Global just took to Twitter to congratulate Qualcomm and confirm that an affordable Nokia Android phone with the power of 5G is on the way.
Sarvikas did not make any other comment but his tweet is evident that we may see a Snapdragon 690 processor-powered Nokia phone soon. It, however, remains to be seen whether or not the device in question could become the first phone with the Snapdragon 690 SoC, because there are going to be many, especially from the Chinese market in this first things first race.
Congratulations @cristianoamon and the awesome team at @Qualcomm for the launch of #Snapdragon 690 Mobile Platform! We are excited to bring our Nokia Phones vision of a truly global, future proof 5G experience at an even more affordable price with this transformational platform! pic.twitter.com/yctqfE13sY— Juho Sarvikas (@sarvikas) June 17, 2020
It is speculated that the said device could be the upcoming Nokia 6.3 or the Nokia 7.3, but there is no strong evidence to believe in it. Well, whatever it is going to be, this would be the company’s second 5G phone. The first was Nokia 8.3 5G that the company launched almost three months back but did not make available for purchase as yet. Now, Sarvikas’ not-so-cryptic tweet depicts that the company is excited to bring the power of 5G to the masses and a Snapdragon 690 SoC-powered phone will help in attaining that target. But this does not define the fate of the Nokia 8.3 5G.
Talking about the upcoming phone, you can expect some features looking at the features of the associated chipset. The Snapdragon 690 processor is packed with a Snapdragon X51 model that supports sub-6GHz networks. It claims to bring about a 20% increase in CPU performance and around 60% increase in GPU performance compared to the likes of Snapdragon 675. The new Snapdragon 690 SoC supports FHD+ displays with a 120Hz refresh rate and allows 4K video recording at 30fps and stills up to 192MP. It also supports Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology.
Let’s see when HMD Global launches this new phone.
