When OnePlus 8 series units started to reach reviewers and buyers, people noticed a significant change during the setup process. It is that OnePlus had replaced the usual OnePlus Shelf with Google's Discover pane. It was a decision appreciated by many but it seems like the Shelf has its own fair share of fans too. OnePlus has announced the return of OnePlus Shelf on the OnePlus 8 series but as an optional feature.
OnePlus Shelf is available with OnePlus Launcher v4.5.4 beta update. It is accessible by visiting the launcher settings and enabling the Swipe down gesture. The last step is to choose "Shelf" as what should the swipe down gesture do. This is important as by default, the gesture brings down the notification center and quick settings panel. Once enabled correctly, this is how the Shelf will appear.
For the uninitiated, an OnePlus Shelf is a place that shows widgets and cards related to relevant apps. It is a single place to quickly check the weather, steps counter, take notes, and recent contacts. It even offers quick access shortcuts to commonly used apps so that a user does not have to browse through the app drawer.
The return of OnePlus Shelf is currently limited to OnePlus 8 series users. In terms of regions, it has been released only for users from North America and the European Union. The team said it will announce the expansion to more devices and regions in the future.
