The iPhone SE (2020) is the cheapest iPhone that you can get with the newest hardware but if you are someone from India, the pricing is still a little steep and falls in the premium segment. This is the reason that many people who were excited to get a brand new iPhone model for quite cheap were left with disappointment. However, a new The Information report claims that Apple is set to start assembling iPhone SE (2020) in India soon which would change the situation.
It is reported that Apple has asked at least one of its Chinese suppliers to ship iPhone SE (2020) components to the Wistron facility situated in India. It wants the shipping of these components to begin by July which is the next month. This will allow the company to get the new affordable iPhone assembled in India which will allow it to avoid heavy import duties.
This will eventually lead to iPhone SE (2020) getting cheaper to purchase in the country. The exact price drop is hard to guess but it is expected to be between 15% and 20% considering Apple has to pay 20% import duty for bringing the phones to India. Apple has already assembled devices like iPhone XR and iPhone 7 in India but it will be the first time it will assemble a current-generation model in the country.
To give you a perspective, the iPhone SE (2020) costs only $399 for the base model in the United States but it is priced at Rs. 42,500 i.e. about $560 in India. There is a significant difference of about $160 between the pricing in these two markets. The idea of having Make in India iPhone SE can and will surely help Apple price the phone cheaper.
