Apple Car Key feature on iOS 14 lets you unlock your car wirelessly

23 June 2020 0

Apple at its WWDC 2020 event announced a new feature called Car Key as part of the new iOS 14 Operating System. Car Key is a way to wirelessly unlock your car with the help of an iPhone. This means, you only require your Apple device to unlock the car. This new feature will prove to be a very helpful tool in some of the cases when we forget our car key at home.

The new digital Car Key feature works over NFC and the first car to support this new feature is 2021 BMW 5 Series with NFC reader, which comes out next month.

As demonstrated by Apple at its online keynote, you just tap on the card door handle using your iPhone to unlock.

Apple emphasizes that digital keys have security benefits. “They live in a secure element in your iPhone.” In case, the digital key goes missing, you can turn it off remotely via iCloud. Apple also points out that the copies of digital keys are not shared with the dealership, unlike the traditional keys. So, you have only access to your digital keys, though you can share with your family members with the help of iMessage.

Here in the case of the BMW 5 series, you can invite your partners to use your BMW key. Inviting people to use digital key give access to unlock your car. With the key you share, you can set options like a restricted driving profile that is perfect for teen drivers. Apple didn’t show what those restrictive profiles include in the demo and rather only showed the full access, which is just a tap away.

Apple also says that it is working on an industry-wide standard that would use its new U1 ultra wideband chip instead of relying solely on NFC. The new feature is available on iPhone XR, iPhone XS and later, iPhone SE (2nd generation) and Apple Watch Series 5 through participating manufacturers
