Amazon has officially announced Watch Party functionality for Prime Video in the United States. It is a virtual viewing party feature that will help users watch shows and moves together even from a remote location. It goes without saying that all participating users must have an active Prime Video or Amazon Prime membership.
A user will be able to start a virtual party session by clicking the Watch Party icon available on the show/movie details page. The feature does not work with content that needs to be purchased or rented. The user will be able to set a name for the Watch Party and share a unique URL with family and friends to invite them.
Watch Party supports up to 100 people in a single virtual party. Since the feature is currently limited to the United States, all users must have a US-based Prime Video account. Once joined, all participants will be able to watch the selected movie or TV show at the same time while also being able to chat with each other. There is native support for text-based chatting along with emojis.
The host of the Watch Party will be in control of the content playback. It means he will be able to play/pause the content as well as other things like rewinding, moving forward, etc. Anything that he will do will get synchronized with other participants. Lastly, the feature can be used only on the PC with support for smartphone apps expected to arrive in the future.
