It is finally official. OnePlus' upcoming affordable smartphone lineup will be called Nord as claimed in recent rumors. The confirmation came in the form of the first episode of a documentary released by the 'OnePlusZLiteThing' Instagram account. It is the official account dedicated to the new lineup that will be unveiled on July 10th in India.
It is a four-episode documentary where the first episode talks about OnePlus started with the goal of providing premium features at cheaper pricing. It started to gain a cult following soon after the release of OnePlus One but with time, its devices have become expensive and the current-gen OnePlus 8 costs $699 for the base model. In fact, the most expensive OnePlus 8 Pro variant costs $999 which puts it in the premium smartphone segment.
This is the reason OnePlus decided to build something for those fans who got connected with the brand because of the affordable pricing. Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, says in the episode that OnePlus Nord will be the company's first product below $500 in recent years. The exact pricing is a mystery but the tease does give us hope that it will be significantly cheaper. However, it should not be surprising if the phone actually costs $499 as that would still mean "below $500".
The good thing for die-hard fans is that OnePlus Nord will go on early pre-orders today i.e. July 1st. It will be a limited preorder window where only 100 units will be up for grabs. OnePlus posted an Instagram story mentioning, "24 hours until we're open for business - for at least a couple of seconds. 100 pre-orders coming up". It is accompanied by a countdown that will go on for another three and a half hours i.e. until 1:30 PM IST. If interested, simply follow the Instagram account @OnePlusZLiteThing to set a reminder when the preorders will go live.
