Original (September 1st, 2020)
Samsung gave a glimpse of its Galaxy Z Fold 2 at the Unpacked 2020 event held on August 5 where it unveiled the Galaxy Note 20 series. But it was not a proper introduction because Samsung had some other plans to disclose its every detail on some other day. Samsung held the Unpacked Part 2 event to especially announce its new foldable phone. Today is the day when Samsung announced just everything about the Galaxy Z Fold 2, including price and availability details.
First things first, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is priced at $1,999.99 in the US, with pre-orders starting today and shipping on September 18th.
The all-new Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with a glass screen, stronger hinge, and better protection to fight against dust to prevent it from undergoing some serious troubles. Basically, the foldable phone tries to overcome the design problems that its original Galaxy Fold came with.
The internal screen has been upgraded and it now uses Samsung’s Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), just what the Galaxy Z Flip folding phone also features. The UTG is said to be more durable than the plastic screen on the original Galaxy Fold. Samsung has also added a plastic screen protector over the UTG so it may still feel a little plasticky but knowing the fact that it is now better protected, this concern looks more like a frivolous matter.
One more important improvement is the 120Hz refresh rate that will make scrolling and other things smoother. The original Fold suffered from “jelly scroll,” where one side of the screen refreshes noticeably slower than the other. The new 120Hz display could turn things better.
Another area that has been improved is the hinge. Samsung likes to call it Hideaway hinge and it has a CAM mechanism that allows the Galaxy Z Fold 2 to stand on its own from 75 to 115 degrees. Also, Samsung has added a sweeping mechanism to the gap between the body and the hinge to keep debris away and prevent it from damage.
Apart from necessary improvements, Samsung chose to change some other things as well with the debut of the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
The new foldable phone has a larger cover display of 6.2-inches compared to what the original Galaxy Fold came with. The internal 7.6-inch display no longer features a huge notched cutout. There is now a single punch hole that carries the camera. It is powered by Snapdragon 865 Plus processor and coupled with 12GB RAM. It will support both sub-6 and mmWave variants of 5G. It has a 4,500mAh battery. The fingerprint scanner is mounted on the side.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has triple rear cameras and all three of them have 12MP sensors, with wide, ultrawide, and telephoto profiles. The cover display has a single selfie camera and a 10MP is housed in the punch-hole on the internal display. There is one more great addition, this one on the software side, though. If you want to take the selfie you would need to make use of the back cameras. All you have to do is unfold the phone, keep back cameras in front of you to take selfies, and the cover display will become your viewfinder where you can see yourself while taking selfies.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will come in two colors – bronze and black. Samsung will also let its customers customize the hinge color with the choice of Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red, and Metallic Blue. But this facility will be available in select markets, including Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the US. There is going to be a Thom Browne bundle as well, which will include a watch and earbuds.
As mentioned above, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is available for $1,999.99 in the US for the 256GB storage variant. Pre-orders have started from today and it will be shipped in around 40 markets from September 18. It will be available from all the major US carriers – AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon as well as unlocked at Samsung’s own website.
Pre-orders for the Thom Browne bundle are also started but it will be available from September 25.
