In the past couple of years, we have noticed a trend where smartphone design has become an integral part of OEMs' plans to stand out in the market. This is the reason we have seen phones with gradient finish and back panels that shift colors depending on the light gets reflected. Vivo is set to take this to a new level as shown in a prototype demonstration video shared on Weibo.
The video shows a prototype Vivo smartphone capable of changing the back panel color completely. The clip starts with a Blue-colored phone but as the video passes, one an see it changing the color to Silver. It is like the user is holding two different smartphones. In the current scenario, we usually see phones simply changing to a different tone/hue of the same color.

The demoed unit shows a complete change of color. This has been made possible with the use of electrochromic glass technology that we also saw with the OnePlus Concept One. While OnePlus used for hiding camera components to offer a clean look, Vivo is utilizing it for delivering completely different colors on the same phone.
It is said that electrochromic tech is neither battery-draining nor does it make the device heat. Both of these are important aspects if Vivo would like users to use the feature for a long time and not just for gimmick purposes. The tech is still in the prototype phase which means it is hard to say exactly when we will get to see commercial devices.
