Apple’s first shipment of final iPhone 12 units is going out to distributers on October 5th— Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) September 29, 2020
The shipment includes:
iPhone 12 mini 5.4
(Definitely the final marketing name)
iPhone 12 6.1
Event on October 13, as I mentioned before.
UPDATE (September 24th, 2020):
Jon Prosser, a well-known tipster, has corroborated previous leaks that the iPhone 12 will be launched on October 13th. It is the date for the launch event after which pre-orders will begin October 16th i.e. Friday as usual. The new iPhone models will go on sale through stores starting October 23rd which is the next week.
UPDATE (September 23rd, 2020):
As per the new Apple Insider report, a tipster has shared information that the iPhone 12 launch event will be held on October 13th. The source claims to be an employee of a Dutch carrier. There is no surety about the legitimacy of these claims but considering the rumored date falls on Tuesday, it could be true as well.
Additionally, British Telecom CEO Marc Allera has been spotted talking about the arrival of a 5G iPhone in the coming days. He was speaking as part of an internal presentation meant for BT and EE. Even Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue made an appearance in the video.
Original (September 7th, 2020)
We are in the September week where Apple usually announces new hardware including an all-new iPhone lineup but this time around, we might see just an event date announcement. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg tweeted that he is expecting Apple to make an announcement this week regarding the iPhone launch event for later this month.
I wouldn’t get too excited about rumors of new Apple products appearing this week. More likely I think: an announcement of the upcoming (of course virtual) September iPhone/Apple Watch event.— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) September 6, 2020
His tweet came after Jon Prosser, a well-known YouTuber and tipster, claimed that Apple has scheduled a press release for September 8th at 9:00 AM EST but is not "locked" yet. It means there could still be changes to the date and time which he said he would keep an eye on. Nevertheless, the tweet got many of Apple fans excited as anticipation is that the press release is for the new product launch.
Apple press release is currently scheduled for Tuesday (September 8) at 9:00am EST — though, I should note that it’s not locked in until the press has been briefed, day of.— Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) September 6, 2020
I’ll tweet early that morning to update you if it changes.
It is worth noting that the speculations are simply based on a previous leak shared by Prosser where he claimed that the new iPad and Apple Watch would be made official in September. His latest tweet about the press release time does not specify its purpose which as per Gurman is nothing but just an announcement for the actual launch event. It goes without saying that as and when the event takes place, it will be an online-only event like the way WWDC 2020 happened.
Another thing to keep in mind that there even though iPhone 12 lineup is made official in September, it is unlikely to go on sale before October. Some rumors even suggest that the models will be made available for purchase in two phases. The standard iPhone 12 models will go on sale ahead of the iPhone 12 Pro variants.
