Sony has now unveiled the Xperia 5 II (Xperia 5 Mark 2). The phone launches under the Compact series from Sony but it is a little larger than previous Compact smartphones. The latest phone in Sony’s Xperia portfolio still not embraces any notch style nor does it have any punch-hole. The top bezels carrying the front camera are slim, though.
Sony Xperia 5 II, the successor to Xperia 1 II features a 6.1-inch display with a tall 21:9 aspect ratio. One major improvement that Sony has brought this time is the 120Hz refresh rate panel to make navigation smoother. It is powered by Snapdragon 865 processor and coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB/256GB storage options. There is a microSD card facility to always expand it to get some extra capacity. The phone supports 4K capturing so, you may require more storage one day to store their big media files.
The Sony Xperia 5 II has three 12MP cameras on the back, where the main sensor, the secondary lens is ultra-wide that feature Dual Pixel autofocus, and then there’s the 3x (70mm) zoom camera, which brings OIS of its own. All these cameras boast ZEISS lenses. Sony has enabled JPG+RAW shooting and the 4K/120 fps slow-motion videos are now shot in HDR. There is a Photography Pro mode as well that features several manual controls such as ISO, shutter speed, EV indicator, as well as the ability to capture in RAW and support noise reduction. Sony has reportedly not detailed the front camera configuration but it is assumed to be the same 8MP as the one we see in Sony Xperia 1 II.
Sony Xperia 5 II has a 4,000mAh battery capacity with an 18W USB PD charger in the box that promises a 50% charge in 30 minutes. You can use a more powerful charger like 21W one. Sony has also added two new features to reduce battery degradation. One is Battery Care that limits the maximum charge at 90%. And, the second is H.S power control (“heat suppression”) that enables a pass-through mode for gaming. This mode uses power directly from the charger to avoid the heat generated by first routing electricity through the battery.
The Sony Xperia 5 II has Dolby Atmos and 360 Reality Audio supported front-firing stereo speakers. The phone is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance.
The Sony Xperia 5 II comes in four color options – Black, Grey, Blue, and Pink. It is priced at $950 and will be available for pre-order on September 29, 2020. It will be shipping on December 4, 2020. Those who pre-order Xperia 5 II by November 29 will get a gaming bundle worth over $400, including a gaming headset, a 10,000mAh power bank, and 21,600 Call of Duty Mobile Points. In Europe, the phone is coming in Q4 for €900 in Black, Blue, and Gray colors.
