Google Maps testing a dedicated car mode UI with bigger buttons

28 September 2020 0

Google Maps team has started testing a new dedicated care mode UI. As the name suggests, this new mode is meant for users looking for navigations while driving their cars. The overall design is inspired by the Android Auto interface for navigation which means there are bigger buttons and app icons.

When Google Maps is put in the navigation mode, it shows two buttons for voice control and home screen respectively. The first one is self-explanatory where the user can interact using voice commands. The second one is called "home screen" but it imitates the feel and appearance of a phone's home screen.

It is packed with different tiles-like shapes that feature individual app shortcuts. These are related to the phone app, contacts, music, and podcasts. The music apps will be the ones that you already have installed on your phone. In the screenshot, one can see apps like Spotify, Tidal, Google Podcasts, YouTube Music, and Spotify Stations.

Even the UI for currently playing music track now features bigger text and music playback controls. The whole idea behind the new UI seems to ensure that drivers do not have to pay attention to their phone. They can just glimpse at the phone's display to get an idea of what's going on and without getting distracted from the road.
