Qualcomm is said to be teaming up with Asus to launch its own-brand gaming smartphone by the end of this year. This is according to the Taiwanese tech outlet DigiTimes citing some industry sources.
The mobile gaming sector has many players, including Black Shark backed by Xiaomi, Nubia, and Lenovo as well but Qualcomm chose to select Asus for its own-brand gaming smartphone over others. Qualcomm has been delivering its best offerings in the form of powerful SoCs to its OEMs but this is going to be the first for it to bring its own branded smartphone in collaboration with a player that has vast knowledge and expertise in the mobile gaming sector.
The collaboration will include designing and developing the phone from scratch. It is not going to be the regular contribution where Qualcomm is delivering its latest offering and Asus is just utilizing it. If the report is to be believed, Asus and Qualcomm will strategize the execution together.
Qualcomm may have a checklist on the things it wants to be on board and it thinks Asus could deliver them. It is believed that Asus will be given the task of designing and developing the hardware and Qualcomm will instruct it on how it wants its first gaming smartphone to be. Needless to say, the semiconductor company will also deliver the power to the smartphone maker with its Snapdragon 875. Note that Qualcomm has an event to conduct in December where it is likely to launch a new Snapdragon 875 processor and if the report from DigiTimes is to be believed this collaborative effort could be made to the public at the same event only.
As per the report, Qualcomm and Asus are expected to produce roughly one million phones a year, with 500,000 units of Qualcomm-branded gaming phones and rest falling under the ROG Phone brand.
We expect a lot from this upcoming phone that will not only house the power of the new processor but also Qualcomm’s idea of bringing a true gaming phone. We can’t wait to know more about this smartphone and see what Qualcomm is planning for its first-ever branded gaming phone. Asus has great expertise in the area as it has been developing some successful gaming phones in its ROG phone brand. We believe this collaboration is going to bring some great results. What do you think?
