Apple iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max with 5G, A14 Bionic, bigger displays launched

13 October 2020 0

Apple at its “Hi, Speed” event held on October 13 announced the new iPhone 12 lineup. The new series brings four new models – iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max are the top-end models of the new lineup coming with 5G, bigger displays, and the newest Apple A14 Bionic chip. The iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display, while the iPhone 12 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch display.

Both the models feature stainless steel design and come in four stunning colors – gold, grey, stainless steel, and a new blue. All the models feature the new “Ceramic Shield,” a technology that has been developed in collaboration with Corning for better protection. As Apple touts, this is a new technology that offers toughness to the new iPhone displays better than any existing tech.

According to Apple, the Ceramic Shield goes beyond the glass and mingles with the glass of the display itself, thus making the iPhone more sturdy and rugged. The technology adds a “new high-temperature crystallization step, which grows nanoceramic crystals within the glass matrix to dramatically improve toughness.” Apple together with Corning controlled the type of crystals and the degree of crystallinity to make the display tougher and optically clear.” Apple concludes that it measured “4 times better drop performance,” which means if your iPhone accidentally slips out of your pocket, Ceramic Shield will have four times the chance of surviving without cracking.

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max are powered by the newest Apple A14 Bionic processor. The main highlight of this chip is that it’s built using the 5nm process technology. Apple claims it offers 50% better performance and GPU than any other smartphone processor available.

The biggest highlight of the event has to be 5G that Apple is digging in for the very first time. All the new iPhone 12 models have the power of 5G. The iPhone 12 Pro lineup will support both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G. They will work with all types of 5G networks from all three major US carriers.

Apple has once again chosen to add a triple-camera system on both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max phones. They have 12MP wide, telephoto, and ultra-wide camera lenses. They both feature a wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture and Apple touts it offers 27% improved low-light performance in photo and video.

Apple says the iPhone 12 Pro Max takes the pro camera experience even further. The new ƒ/1.6 aperture Wide camera boasts a 47 percent larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for a massive 87 percent improvement in low-light conditions. It also includes the expansive Ultra-Wide camera and a 65 mm focal length Telephoto camera for increased flexibility.

Apple also teased a new feature that it calls “Apple ProRAW” that will be available on the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Price and availability

The price of the iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999 and the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1,099 for 128GB, 512GB, and 256GB storage variants.
