Sony has officially confirmed the release of the Apple TV app to select smart TVs. It will be available on the Sony X900H 4K HDR TV series in the United States starting today. The app was originally limited to Apple devices and then arrived on Samsung TVs. It is the first time that an Android TV is receiving Appel TV app support.
Once the app becomes available, Sony TV users will be able to browse and watch Apple TV content on the big screen. It goes without saying that one will need to have a relevant subscription to access content and live TV channels. The app even offers Family Sharing where subscriptions can be shared with up to six family members. Each member will need to sign-in using their individual Apple ID and password to get personalized recommendations.
The app support will be expanded to "most 2019 and 2020 models" by the end of this year. Sony also has plans of releasing the application for a few 2018 models. It is yet to reveal exactly what models will get the support and the one that will be left out. We will keep you posted as any new announcement will be made.
In the official announcement, Sony said:
"Sony's smart TV users can browse the Apple TV app to buy or rent more than 100,000 movies and TV shows, including titles available in 4K HDR and with Dolby Atmos, as well as enjoy personalized and curated recommendations and access their library of movie and TV show purchases from Apple. Select Sony TVs also support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. With AirPlay 2, customers can effortlessly play videos and other content from their iPhone, iPad or Mac directly to their smart TV. HomeKit allows customers to easily and securely control Sony's smart TVs using the Home app or by asking Siri on their Apple devices."
