Samsung back at top, Xiaomi surpasses Apple in Q3 2020: IDC

30 October 2020 0

International Data Corporation (IDC), well-known market research and analytics firm, has published its latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report. It is for Q3 2020 where data gives us an idea of which smartphone brands performed better and which ones saw a decline in their worldwide smartphone shipments.

After a long wait, Samsung has finally reclaimed the top spot with a 22.7% market share in the quarter. This translates to shipments of 80.4 million units which is a 2.9% YoY growth. It specifically performed better in the Indian market with a 40% growth as compared to the last year. The success of the Galaxy M-series proved to be a crucial factor for the brand's growth. Even in the United States, it performed very well due to the demand for Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and Galaxy A-series.

The growth of the South Korean tech giant in addition to the U.S. trade ban resulted in Huawei dropping to the second position. It registered a significant drop of 22% in comparison to Q3 2019. The company could ship only 51.9 million units around the globe which translates to only 14.7% market share.

The most noteworthy shift in IDC quarterly rankings is coming from another Chinese brand. Xiaomi has managed to surpass Apple for the first time since its inception days. It shipped 46.5 million units worldwide which are just about 5 million more than Apple. The two companies have a market share of 13.1% and 11.8% respectively. Xiaomi's road to the success story is unchanged as it continues to be a dominant player in the budget and mid-range price segments in China and India.

Apple is said to have suffered a decline due to the delayed iPhone 12 series launch. It usually announces new iPhone models in the third quarter but due to the COVID-19 situation, it made the new announcement in the fourth quarter. We have already heard reports of huge iPhone 12 demands in all the markets wherever they have gone on sale so far. It would not be surprising to see Apple get back to the third spot in the table once the fourth quarter ends.
