Original Post (November 18, 2020)

Vivo has finally introduced OriginOS, its new custom Android skin. This gets a major distinction from the existing Funtouch software.

The new OriginOS home screen now shows widgets in rectangular and square shapes. This looks to be inspired by Apple iOS 14 redesigned widgets. Vivo calls this arrangement inspired by Klotski, a sliding block puzzle that includes both small and big rectangles arranged here and there. Such a look offers a quick glance at the things that matter to you the most. These include weather, date & time, flight information, and stuff like that. Also, these blocks constantly update info akin to Windows Live Tiles. Vivo calls it Nano Alerts that offers relevant notifications in an elegant way, without having you open the apps.

There are now some live wallpapers called the “Behavior Wallpapers” that mimic the time of the day, being brightest at midday and going darkest at night. Vivo also touts that these wallpapers feature a timelapse of flowers blooming. Users can also adjust the animation speed as well.

Vivo is said to be making available its existing Funtouch OS and the new OriginOS together by introducing OriginOS Parallel World. This allows users to freely choose between the new and the old Android skins.

Apart from the aesthetic changes, the OriginOS brings some improvements around the functionality as well. Vivo has worked on improving the system fluency mainly. This comes under the new feature Multi-Turbo 5.0 that focuses on optimizing the memory and thus offering better and smooth performance.

Multi-Turbo 5.0 is based on three technologies – memory fusion, process optimization, and application preloading. According to Vivo, an 8GB RAM phone running OriginOS will offer a performance equivalent to a phone with 11GB RAM. And, a 12GB RAM phone could offer an experience equivalent to 15GB RAM. According to Vivo, this is possible due to the fusion of the RA and unused ROM space of the phone. The algorithm makes use of this fusion and enhances the overall experience in Origin OS.

Furthermore, Process optimization reduces unwanted memory consumption for so many system operations, thus the applications run smoothly. The Application preload is relatively self-explanatory, though it is currently unknown how it is done. This tech intelligently preloads applications and significantly reduces the application startup time and cold start by 40%.

It is currently unknown when the OriginOS will roll out globally or to supported devices. Vivo has announced the OriginOS on its first day of the developer’s conference, so it is possible that the company will reveal more tomorrow. Also, it may announce the name of the eligible devices at its tomorrow’s continued event.
