Samsung is commonly rumored to be one of the OEMs working on under-display camera technology. There were some rumors suggesting the Galaxy S21 would be the first Samsung phone to feature the tech but recent leaks have declined that. A fresh rumor has emerged from South Korea claiming that Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the first device with an under-display camera.
As per ETNews, Samsung's development of under-display technology is progressing in the right direction. The team has already developed a display panel that would play nicely with the tech. It comes with a wider gap between pixels for allowing more light to enter. It is an important step otherwise camera would not be able to click photos in an acceptable quality.
Even though the panel has been developed, the team still needs to make use of specialized algorithms for image correction. This is because the light will get refracted by the OLED display panel. The camera sensor is from none other than but Samsung LSI itself. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is set for release sometime in Q3 2020 that should be enough time for the team to do everything and sort things out for prime time.
The only under-display camera phone that is available commercially is the ZTE Axon 20 5G. It was launched about three months ago and is available officially only in China. If no other phone launches in the meantime, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 could become the second phone with the tech and probably the first globally available one.
