UPDATE (July 2nd, 2021):
After six months of closed beta testing, TikTok has now expanded to the ability to record longer videos for everyone around the globe. It is now possible for creators to post videos up to three minutes long as compared to just 60 seconds before. This should allow them to express themselves better and come up with more diverse content.
It is a staged rollout which means you might not see the feature right away. TikTok says all users will receive an in-app notification whenever the new three minutes limit becomes active for their respective accounts.

TikTok videos are short in length that makes it possible for users to browse through a lot of the content within a set of times as compared to other platforms. It is one of the reasons TikTok got so popular but that very essence of the platform is likely to change in the future. TikTok has reportedly started testing videos with lengths as long as 3 minutes.
The change was spotted and shared by Matt Navarra, a social media consultant, on his Twitter account. He posted a screenshot showing that TikTok is allowing some users to post videos that can be up to 3 minutes long. The newly added flexibility is available on both smartphone apps and desktop versions. For the app thing, the user will need to ensure that it is the latest version.

One important thing to keep in mind is that TikTok's 3-minute feature is in the early testing phase. It is available only for a few select users and they have been alerted through in-app notification. It means if you have not received any such alert from TikTok, it is likely that your account does not have the freedom to post longer videos.
It is unknown when the feature will become available for everyone but whenever it happens, it will undoubtedly be a major change for TikTok. It will be interesting to see whether that will have any effect on user engagement as being able to watch short videos is what makes the app stand apart from the competition.
