As the last year wrapped up and the New Year started, many shared their year in review and important milestones. Similarly, Facebook also shared some of its most significant events as we traversed through the New Year.
Facebook shared that more and more people spent their New Year’s Eve at home and connected with others with the help of online video and audio calling. Facebook shared a breakdown of how people connected during New Year’s Eve using technology. Facebook said this 2020 New Year’s Eve was a lot different by comparing it with some stats from important events.
More than 1.4 billion voice and video calls were made on New Year’s Eve 2020 globally. This is the most ever calls made in a single day on WhatsApp. In fact, it is more than what WhatsApp calls recorded in March 2020, the early days of the pandemic.
Facebook also shared the top AR effect in the US was “2020 Fireworks.” Furthermore, New Year’s Eve 2020 was the biggest day ever for Messenger group video calls. Facebook recorded nearly 2X more group video calls on the day compared to an average day.
Facebook also shared some interesting records made by Instagram Live and Facebook Live. There were more than 55M live broadcasts across Facebook and Instagram globally on New Year’s Eve.
Clearly, technology is shaping the world, and some external factors such as COVID-19 pandemic-like unavoidable conditions giving us more reasons to stay dependent on it and make the best out of it.
