Facebook working on a Clubhouse-like audio chat product | Report

11 February 2021 0

Facebook is a social media juggernaut and it likes to be that way. This is the reason it keeps acquiring or cloning other social media platforms and features that start to gain popularity, especially among youth. The newest buzz word in the social media world is Clubhouse, an application that lets users create rooms and have audio-only chats. It has also grabbed the attention of Mark Zuckerberg who has reportedly already started working on a rival product.

The report is coming from The New York Times citing two different sources familiar with the matter. Facebook is said to be aiming to expand to other modes of communications that are getting popular. Unfortunately, not much is known about the Clubhouse clone product yet as it is currently said to be early stages of development. This is another reason that it is hard to say if and when it will be launched for public usage.

If we talk about Clubhouse, it is the newest kid on the social media block. The application supports only audio as the form of communication. It means you cannot share text messages or videos with other users. Each user is free to create rooms and invite other users to have conversations. These rooms can be centered around any particular theme or can also be completely random which is up to the creator. If you join a room, it is up to you whether you want to speak and participate in the conversation or simply stay silent and listen to what others are talking about.

However, it is important to note that Clubhouse is a very exclusive application for the time being. A user first needs to have an iOS device to be able to install the application. The next step is to have an invite to be able to join the platform which you can get either from any of the existing users or through the platform itself. The latter part is where you will be put on a waitlist but the good thing is that the app lets you reserve your preferred username even if you do not have an invite yet.
