Oppo demoes no-contact wireless charging; VOOC charge tech going places

23 February 2021 0

After Xiaomi, now Oppo has demoed its truly wireless charging technology, which it likes to call Wireless Air Charging tech. The details on the same are pretty scarce but the 30-second demo video can tell you briefly about Oppo’s intentions.

The demo features the company’s rollable phone and a charging pad. The short clip, in the beginning, asks “what does the future of wireless charging look like?” and it then moves to show off the tech. The video shows a phone is being lifted up from the charging pad and still gets charged, all thanks to Oppo’s new innovation in the field of charging tech.

But unlike Xiaomi’s tech, this one from Oppo can charge a device when it is only some millimeters away from the charging pad. As the video highlights, one can still watch videos or play games while their phone is getting charged simultaneously. In Xiaomi’s demo, we saw a charging station similar to an air purifier in size charging the device in the air even when the latter was pretty far from. At MWC Shanghai Booth, Oppo explained its Wireless Air Charging tech can go up to 7.5W of charging power.

Looks like many brands are now focusing on some advanced charging methods so that one can still use their phones while they are on charge. Motorola also demoed its no-contact wireless charging technology last month. It showed the charging station can still charge even when the device is 100cm away from it.

Apart from the Wireless Air Charging tech, Oppo also announced that its “The Flash Initiative” via which its VOOC flash charging tech will go places. This means the VOOC flash-charging technology will go beyond Oppo’s own brand products. Oppo has announced its global partnership with FAW-Volkswagen, Anker, and NXP Semiconductors.

So, we might see some Oppo Flash Charge-compatible products like battery packs and adapters in the near future. Also, VW and Audi users in China will soon enjoy fast-charging decks in their cars using which they will be able to charge their phones faster on the go. It is currently unclear whether or not the VOOC built-in facility also coming to cars made in Europe and the US.
