Instagram Lite gets Reels support as well

24 February 2021 0

Instagram Lite application is receiving a new update that brings support for Instagram Reels. It is a feature that was limited to the main application of the popular social media platform owned by Facebook. The addition of this new feature is currently available exclusively for users in India but could expand to other countries in the near future.

Reels is an Instagram feature inspired by widely used short video platform TikTok. It was made available globally during August 2020 and has received a good response, especially in India. This is the reason team decided to add Reels to Instagram Lite as well and help reels reach a wider audience. It will be accessible through a newly added Reels tab that sits between the add photo/video and user profile options.

It should be noted that Instagram Lite currently supports only browsing and watching reels. The app will not let users create their own reels and share them with others. This is something that can only be done through the main app. This makes sense as the Instagram Lite is supposed to be a lightweight application with a focus on low data consumption.

In an official statement, Facebook said,

"Now with this update, everyone using the Instagram Lite app in India will be able to view Reels with the Reels tab. This feature was expedited for India because of the traction Reels is seeing in India, and the early adoption of the new Instagram Lite app."

The lite version of Instagram debuted in India in December last year. It is available exclusively for Android devices and weighs less than 2MB in size. This makes it faster to download even on a mobile connection without worrying about losing a significant amount of mobile data. The app is specifically meant for users with low-power devices and/or with unreliable limited mobile data connections.
