Remember the first time you heard that OnePlus will launch one more member to its yet-to-come OnePlus 9 series? Well, the rumors on this third member of the OnePlus 9 series have been around for some time now. But, it wasn’t so long ago that the famous tipster Evan Blass aka @evleaks revealed the name of this third phone - OnePlus 9R. Today, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed it as well and in fact, shared more insights around it.
In an interview with an Indian publication, Pete not only confirmed that the OnePlus 9R is going to be a cheaper version amongst all but also revealed the company’s vision behind it. Pete stresses that users demand a flagship experience at an affordable price point and that is why the company is bringing the OnePlus 9R.
Pete clearly said that the OnePlus 9R is going to be a premium-tier device and focus on mobile gaming at a more affordable price point in India. The phone will launch on March 23 alongside the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro phones. He further said OnePlus 9R will be equipped with features like smooth scrolling, immersive gaming controls, and a “superior” viewing experience.
Pete claims that their products resonate with the gaming community as they were successful in fulfilling their customers’ needs when it comes to gaming. That’s why the company is pretty bullish about its decision of adding a gaming-centric phone to the upcoming OnePlus 9 series as well.
In the interview, Pete also talked over the subjects like 5G and the company’s design philosophy but he didn’t connect the two with the OnePlus 9R, so we can’t be sure if the device is going to be 5G capable. However, if it is keeping the price of the OnePlus 9R low compared to the other two phones OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro in the series then the 5G support is unlikely.
It is very possible that with the OnePlus 9R, OnePlus wants to regain its Flagship Killer tag that it has more or less lost during its journey.
