TCL has showcased a new concept called Fold 'n Roll and as the name is pretty much suggestive, the device holds both, the folding and rolling mechanism so to take up different shapes.
The device in its true self is a smartphone that when unfolds takes the form of a phablet and becomes a tablet when rolls out further. It starts off as a 6.87-inch phone and extends to a large-sized 10-inch tablet.
Just like any traditional smartphone, such form factors can easily fit into the pockets, but they have much more to offer. Take it out when you want to use it as a smartphone, unfold it outwards when you want to read something, or have a bigger view and slide its display further out to make it look like a tablet and enjoy watching full-screen videos. This is a “true 3-in-1 device,” as TCL puts it.
As you might have guessed as well, this is well suited for people who want to churn out the best from their phones. With the Fold 'n Roll concept, the company wants to convey that such devices have the potential to become not only your daily driver but also a host of big-screen entertainment in the future.
The new Fold 'n Roll device combines the company’s DragonHinge technology and the company’s expertise in flexible displays. TCL introduced the DragonHinge technology last year in January where it announced that with the help of this tech, it can produce several use cases of flexible displays. And, interestingly, fast forward to today we are seeing one such use case in the form of a prototype that not only folds but rolls up and out as well.
TCL Fold 'n Roll was announced at TCL's special online-only event held on April 14 where the company also took the wraps off new TCL 20-series smartphones. Together with them, TCL also shared some interesting tidbits and its ideas for the flexible displays.
TCL said that the company believes flexible displays, including folding and rolling displays are the future of mobile. “As part of our vertical integration with our sister company CSOT, TCL is positioned perfectly as a key player to help usher the industry into this new generation of the display.”
TCL said that whatever form factors and prototypes we have seen till now are just a fraction of what the company is working on in its labs.
TCL said it is still exploring the technical specifications of the Fold ‘n Roll. This is a concept device for now and might become a reality in the future.
